Originally published in 1893 this book was a landmark achievement and the first extensive publication on Japanese gardens in the West. Although the clasifications Conder used in this book have been superceded by the extensive research since its publication, the book gives an excellent historical perspective.
Besides numerous drawings in the sections on classification and composition the suuplement contains 40 Plates with b/w photographs of Japanese gardens around the turn of the 18th/19th century.
